We have a new Champion - Fiona Anderson from Formby Ladies' who beat Helen Braddock from Bolton Old Links in the final. For pictures and results, please go to the Championship page.
We also have a new Vice Captain Elect - Miss Bet Burns, who is a member of both Penwortham and Ashton and Lea golf clubs. Bet will be Captain in 2014, and has been on the Vets' Committee for the last 2 years. She is also a good golfer and is a member of the Penwortham Scratch Team. We are all delighted that Bet is to be Captain and wish her well for 2014.
As you may know, due to overwhelming demand, we changed the format of the Ivy Hosker at Mossock Hall from a better ball to a team of four, with a view to accommodating a few more of you who had not managed to get into Clitheroe. We still have times left from 3pm to 3.40pm, and we still have times available for the Cecil Leitch at Accrington and the Silver Slipper at Blackley. Entry forms are available on the Competition dates/Entry forms page, so if you fancy a day out, please send your entries in soon.
Some of you will be very interested to know that the use of Distance Measuring Devices has now been approved under Local Rule by the Northern Veteran Ladies' Golf Association and our Association for all 2012 competitions. I would draw your attention to the words which have been emboldened.
Players must abide by the R&A rule 14.3 concerning the use of DMD’s:- A player may obtain distance information by using a device that measures distance only. If, during a stipulated round, a player uses a distance-measuring device that is designed to gauge or measure other conditions that might affect her play (e.g. gradient, wind speed, temperature, etc), the player is in breach of Rule 14-3, for which the penalty is disqualification, regardless whether any such function is actually used.
EWGA have now come out with further elaboration of this rule to deal with the use of mobile phones which have golf apps on them, which we believe makes the position very clear:
Note:
(a) Trolleys with a distance-measuring capability may be used provided any other features, which are non-conforming, are disabled (e.g. taped up or switched off).
(b) A multi-functional device, such as a smartphone or PDA, may be used as a distance measuring device provided it contains a distance measuring application that meets all of the above limitations (i.e. it must measure distance only). In addition, when the distance measuring application is being used, there must be no other features or applications installed on the device that, if used, would be in breach of the Rules, whether or not they are actually used."
Penalty for breach of (a) or (b): Disqualification
•• Advice on the use of a mobile phone as a distance-measuring device: As particular phones do not conform to the conditions above, to protect players from the risk of disqualification, we strongly recommend that mobile phones are not used as distance measuring devices.
